He served as [[List of major Archbishops of Ernakulam-Angamaly|Archbishop of Ernakulam]] from 1956 to 1984, and was elevated to the [[Cardinal (Catholicism)|cardinalate]] in 1969.

==Biography==
Joseph Parecattil was born in [[Kidangoor, Ernakulam|Kidangoor]], Kerala, and studied at the [[minor seminary]] of [[Ernakulam]] and the [[Seminary|major seminary]] of [[Kandy]], from where he obtained a [[Doctor of Theology|doctorate in theology]] (with a [[Thesis|dissertation]] entitled: ''"[[Augustine of Hippo|Augustine]] vs. [[Pelagius (British monk)|Pelagius]] on [[Divine grace|Grace]]"'').<ref name=miranda>{{cite news|work=The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church|title=PARECATTIL, Joseph|url=http://www.fiu.edu/~mirandas/bios-p.htm#Parecattil|last=Miranda|first=Salvador}}</ref> [[Varghese Payyappilly Palakkappilly]] was the manager of St. Mary's High School, Alwaye where he had his boarding life.<ref>[http://www.ernakulamarchdiocese.org/payyappilly.pdf Payyappilly Palakkappilly Varghese Kathanar] {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110717044310/http://www.ernakulamarchdiocese.org/payyappilly.pdf |date=17 July 2011 }}</ref> He also attended the [[University of Madras]], where he specialised in economics.<ref name=miranda/> [[Holy Orders|Ordained]] to the priesthood on 24 August 1939,<ref name=hierarchy>{{cite news|work=Catholic-Hierarchy.org|title=Joseph Cardinal Parecattil|url=http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bparec.html}}</ref> he then did pastoral work in the [[Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly|Archdiocese of Ernakulam]], serving as [[Curate|assistant pastor]] at Narakal and [[North Paravur]] and as pastor at Chunangamvely. He was also editor of the weekly [[Sathyadeepam]] ("Light of Truth").<ref name=miranda/>

On 28 October 1953, Parecattil was appointed [[Auxiliary bishop|Auxiliary Bishop]] of Ernakulam and [[Titular bishop|Titular Bishop]] of Arethusa dei Siri by [[Pope Pius XII]].<ref name=hierarchy/> He received his [[Bishop (Catholicism)|episcopal consecration]] on the following 30 November from Cardinal [[Eugène-Gabriel-Gervais-Laurent Tisserant|Eugène Tisserant]], with Archbishop [[Joseph Attipetty]] and Bishop [[George Alapatt]] serving as [[Consecrator|co-consecrators]].<ref name=hierarchy/> After the death of Archbishop [[Mar Augustine Kandathil|Augustine Kandathil]] on 10 January 1956, Parecattil was promoted to [[List of major Archbishops of Ernakulam-Angamaly|Archbishop of Ernakulam]] on the following 20 July.<ref name=hierarchy/> He attended the [[Second Vatican Council]] from 1962 to 1965, and served as President of the Syro-Malabar [[Episcopal Conference]], of the Kerala Catholic Episcopal Conference, and of the [[Catholic Bishops' Conference of India]] (1972–1976).<ref name=miranda/>

[[Pope Paul VI]] created him [[Cardinal (Catholicism)|Cardinal Priest]] of [[Santa Maria Regina Pacis a Monte Verde|Nostra Signora "Regina Pacis"]] in the [[Papal consistory|consistory]] of 30 April 1969.<ref name=miranda/> In addition to his duties as archbishop, Parecattil was also President of the Pontifical Commission for the Revision of the [[Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches|Code of Oriental Canon Law]] from 1972 to 1987.<ref name=miranda/> He was one of the [[Cardinal electors in Papal conclaves, August and October 1978|cardinal electors]] who participated in the [[Papal conclave|conclaves]] of [[Papal conclave, August 1978|August]] and [[Papal conclave, October 1978|October 1978]], which elected [[Pope John Paul I|Popes John Paul I]] and [[Pope John Paul II|John Paul II]] respectively. After an 18-year-long tenure, Holy see ordered him to submit his resignation and he resigned as archbishop on 30 January 1984.<ref name=hierarchy/>

Parecattil died in [[Kochi, India|Kochi]], aged 74. He is buried in [[St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica, Ernakulam|St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica]] in Ernakulam.<ref name=miranda/>
