He is married to Sangamithrai, Daughter of late [[Indian National Congress]] veteran [[Member of the Legislative Assembly (India)|MLA]] Vedhaiyan. Dr. K. Gopal was a [[Member of the Legislative Assembly]] from [[Nannilam (State Assembly Constituency)|Nannilam]] 1991 to 1996. In 2014 he was elected to the [[Lok Sabha]] from the [[Nagapattinam (Lok Sabha constituency)]] as an [[Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam]] candidate in the [[Indian general election in Tamil Nadu, 2014|2014]] election.
