== Biography ==
Rajanna was involved in the [[Cooperative movement in India|cooperative sector]] since 1972. His public life began around the same period when he served as secretary of the Kyathasandra [[taluk]] unit of the [[Indian National Congress]]. In 1976, he was elected president of the [[nagar panchayat]] Kyathasandra, before heading INC's Youth Congress wing of the [[Tumkur district]]-unit between 1980 and 1984.<ref name="profile"/>

Rajanna was elected to the [[Karnataka Legislative Council]] in 1998 and completed the six-year term till 2004.<ref name="profile"/> After being denied an INC ticket to contest the [[2004 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election|2004 Legislative Assembly election]] from [[Bellavi Assembly constituency|Bellavi]], Rajanna quit the party and joined the [[Janata Dal (Secular)]] (JD(S)),<ref>{{cite news |title=Congress leaders from Tumkur admitted to Janata Dal (S) |url=http://www.hindu.com/2004/02/27/stories/2004022704990400.htm |access-date=3 May 2024 |work=The Hindu |date=27 February 2004 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080122160306/http://www.hindu.com/2004/02/27/stories/2004022704990400.htm |archive-date=22 January 2008}}</ref> with whose ticket he successfully contested.
