Born in [[Tulu language|Tulu]] Speaking [[Bunt (community)|Bunt]] family of landlords, Alva was a medical practitioner who earned the degree [[Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery|M. B. B. His political career began when he was elected to the [[Karnataka Legislative Assembly]] in 1957&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;Buntara&amp;quot;/&amp;gt; representing the [[Suratkal]] constituency.
