==Early life and career==
Singh was born the 14th out of 16 children in [[Gujranwala]] (now in [[Pakistan]]) to [[Punjabi people|Punjabi]] parents.{{Citation needed|date= August 2018}} He went to college and earned master's degrees in [[sociology]] and [[philosophy]].{{Citation needed|date= August 2018}} He earned his money through his family's textile mill in [[Bareilly]]. In elections, he always contested as an independent, and always lost.<ref name="BJP" />

===Thoughts on his campaigns===
Singh looked at the security deposit which he has always lost as his 'humble contribution' to the national fund, and said he never campaigned or used money to earn support. In 1992 he contested against K.R. Narayanan for [[Vice-President of India]] and secured 1 vote.

According to his family, Singh was hospitalised after a paralysis attack on 19 December 1998.
