Kalanjiyam's first film, ''[[Poomani (film)|Poomani]]'' (1996), featuring [[Murali (Tamil actor)|Murali]] and [[Devayani (actress)|Devayani]], won commercial and critical acclaim, and the director won the [[Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Story Writer]] for 1996.
