== Etymology ==

In [[Tulu language|Tulu]], 'Kati' means 'center'. Kateel is midway between Kanakagiri, the source of the river, and Pavanje, where the river joins the sea. 'Ila' means area (land), thus the place is called 'Kati + lla', Kateel.
