Lala Suraj Nandan Prasad was born on the New Year day of 1914 at [[Bihar Sharif]]<ref name="Lala Suraj Nandan Prasad is dead" /> to Babu Ram Prasad Lalwas, a lawyer.<ref name="Lala Surajnandan Prasad" /> He passed his matriculation from Dumka Zilla School in 1933 standing first in [[Bhagalpur district]], winning Mcpherson Gold Medal and passed MBBS from [[Patna Medical College and Hospital]], then Prince of Wales Medical College, in 1939.<ref name="Lala Suraj Nandan Prasad is dead" /> After his internship for a year at [[Danapur]], [[Gopalganj, Bihar|Gopalganj]],<ref name="Lala Suraj Nandan Prasad is dead" /><ref name="Fruitful and purposeful life">{{cite web | url=http://pratappharma.blogspot.ae/2015/04/fruitful-and-purposeful-life-drlala.html | title=Fruitful and purposeful life | publisher=Pratap Pharmaceuticals | date=2015 | access-date=7 June 2015}}</ref> he joined his alma mater in 1940 as a deputy superintendent and worked there till 1945<ref name="Lala Suraj Nandan Prasad is dead" /> when he moved to England where he completed a diploma in child health.<ref name="Lala Surajnandan Prasad" /> He continued his stay in UK and secured an MRCP from the [[Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh]] in 1946 after which he worked there till 1947, at institutions such as the Hospital for Sick Children, [[Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh]] and the [[London Hospital]].<ref name="Lala Surajnandan Prasad" />
