His family hailed from the [[Goan Catholics|Goan Catholic]] community.&lt;br /&gt;

Mascarenhas started his career as a journalist in the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Morning Standard&amp;#039;&amp;#039; at [[Mumbai]].&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;goanobserver2004&amp;quot;/&amp;gt; He worked as a sub-editor at the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bombay Sentinel&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, under editor [[B.
