After being educated at [[Cheltenham College]],<ref name=smart102>Smart, p. 102</ref> Finch was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion, the [[Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)|Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment]] on 1 July 1908.<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=28164|date=4 August 1908|page=5733}}</ref> He served in the 2nd Battalion the [[Cheshire Regiment]] in the [[World War I|First World War]] and his capture and subsequent detention as a [[prisoner of war]] was recognised by his appointment as an [[Officer of the Order of the British Empire]].<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=13558|date=2 February 1920|page=309|city=e}}</ref> He was appointed a companion of the [[Distinguished Service Order]] in the [[1917 New Year Honours]]<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=29886|date=29 December 1916|page=22|supp=y}}</ref> and went on to command the 13th (Service) Battalion of the [[Cheshire Regiment]] in the later stages of the war.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.ww1infantrycos.co.uk/cheshire.html|title=Commanging Officers: the Cheshire Regiment|accessdate=26 May 2020}}</ref><br />
