== Early life ==

Nagappa was born in a family of traditional ''sthapathis'' or sculptors.<ref name="thehindu_20090506">{{cite news|title=Memories of Madras: Giving shape to the past|work=[[The Hindu]]|first=Prince|last=Frederick|date=6 May 2009|url=http://www.hindu.com/mp/2009/05/06/stories/2009050650180100.htm|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090509185714/http://www.hindu.com/mp/2009/05/06/stories/2009050650180100.htm|url-status=dead|archive-date=9 May 2009}}</ref> Sculpting was the main occupation of his ancestors for five generations before him.<ref name="asiantribune_20090914" /> Nagappa wanted to join the [[Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai|Madras School of Arts]] but could not.<ref name="thehindu_20090506" /> However, impressed with his abilities, [[William Snelling Hadaway|Hadaway]], the Principal employed Nagappa as his assistant.<ref name="thehindu_20090506" />

== Career ==

When there was a plague epidemic in the [[Madras Presidency]], the government requested Hadaway to prepare a painting of a victim so as to study the plague in detail. Nagappa prepared the painting with the help of a mould of the victim and was acknowledged and awarded for his work.<ref name="thehindu_20090506" /> Following this success, Nagappa set up a studio at Narasingapuram (now part of [[Ritchie Street]]), [[Madras]].<ref name="thehindu_20090506" />

In 1935, Nagappa prepared a bronze statue of [[George V of the United Kingdom|George V]] and presented it to the monarch during his silver jubilee celebrations on behalf of [[Lodd Govindoss Chathurbhujadoss]], a popular businessman and philanthropist of Madras.<ref name="asiantribune_20090914" /><ref name="thehindu_20090506" /> Nagappa was awarded a "[[Rao Bahadur]]" medal for his work.<ref name="asiantribune_20090914" /><ref name="thehindu_20090506" /> George V also appointed him official sculptor to the British Crown and presented him with a [[coat of arms]].<ref name="asiantribune_20090914" />

Nagappa had five sons, two of whom Rajaram Nagappa - [[Mani Nagappa]] and [[Jayaram Nagappa]] were also acclaimed sculptors.
