In 1882 Shri. Sethu Rao and Rama Rao started a small primary school in a small pillared outdoor hall (mandapam) in the Valaikulam Street in Srivilliputhur. Initially, the school functioned as co-educational school. With other higher classes started in new building in Pennington Library Street, the school functioned with the name as Hindu High School (HHS). Later, when the number of girls in the school increased, a separate Girls school was started. In 1951, the HHS was named Guru Gnana Sambandar H.H.S. after Guru Gnana Sambandar who was born in Srivilliputtur. The other two schools under the management of the H.H.S.
