Mahendra Suri&amp;#039;s fame rests on the work &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Yantrarāja&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, which introduced the astrolabe to the Indian astronomer.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:0&amp;quot; /&amp;gt; Mahendra Sūri was patronized by the [[Tughlaq dynasty|Tughluq]] ruler of Delhi, [[Firuz Shah Tughlaq|Firūz Shāh]] (r. 1351–1388), who evinced keen interest in astronomy. Firūz Shāh had earlier caused the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Bṛhatsaṃhitā&amp;#039;&amp;#039; of Varāhamihira to be translated into [[Persian language|Persian]]. At the sultan&amp;#039;s instance, Mahendra Sūri studied the astrolabe and introduced it to the Sanskrit audience in 1370 in his &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Yantrarāja&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. The &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Yantrarāja&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is best described as an [[astrolabe]] user&amp;#039;s manual. It explains how this king (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;rāja&amp;#039;&amp;#039;) of instruments (&amp;#039;&amp;#039;yantra&amp;#039;&amp;#039;) is to be constructed and commissioned for purposes of observation. The &amp;#039;&amp;#039;saumya&amp;#039;&amp;#039; &amp;#039;&amp;#039;yantra&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (northern instrument) projected from the [[South Pole]] and the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;yāmya&amp;#039;&amp;#039; &amp;#039;&amp;#039;yantra&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (southern instrument) projected from the North Pole are discussed separately, followed by a description of the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;phaṇīndra&amp;#039;&amp;#039; &amp;#039;&amp;#039;yantra&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (the serpentine instrument), which combines both.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:0&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:1&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:2&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:3&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

A detailed discussion on the application of the astrolabe is found in Malayendu Sūri&amp;#039;s commentary on the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Yantrarāja&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. This commentary is also interesting because it provided, for the first time to Indian astronomers, tables for ready reference, which helped simplify calculations. The commentator gave latitudes of 75 cities.
