Of the 742 species mentioned in [[Hendrik van Rheede|van Rheede]]'s [[Hortus Malabaricus]], 432 are bred here.<ref name="Mathrubhumi"/> Many rare endangered aquatic plants, 150 species of [[pteridophytes]], more than 60 species of [[bryophytes]], 52 species of fruit trees, 60 species of [[aromatic plants]] and many medicinal plants are protected in the botanical garden.<ref name="Mathrubhumi"/> It is home to more than 400 Indian aquatic plants, and is the largest collection in the country in this category.<ref name="ManoramaOnline"/>

The institution started as a Govt.
