The institute was established in 1965 as a unit under the polytechnic of technical education department.<ref name=welcome>{{cite web|title=Welcome to Bhai Parmanand Institute of Business Studies|url=http://delhi.gov.in/wps/wcm/connect/doit_bpibs/BPIBS/Home/|accessdate=13 October 2017}}</ref> In 1972 the institute was given independent institute status and renamed Institute of Commercial Practice.<ref name=welcome/> It 1986 it was renamed Bhai Parmanand Institute of Business Studies, after the Sikh Martyr, [[Bhai Parmanand]].<ref name=welcome/>
