Kukkutarama was also a Buddhist in [[Kosambi, India|Kosambi]]. 

Kukkutarama [[sangharama]] in [[Pataliputra|Patliputra]] was the site of [[Third Buddhist council|third Buddhist Council]] which was held under patronage of [[Ashoka|Emperor Ashoka]] in the 17th year of his reign in c. 247 BC. The Council had lasted for nine months. Over 1000 monks participated under the guidance of [[Moggaliputta-Tissa|Moggaliputta Tissa]]. The doctrinal issues of Pancavatthu (Five-Points) that had caused a split in the monastic establishment was resolved and [[Theravāda Abhidhamma|Abhidhamma]] was finalised. After completion of the Council, Ashoka sent out messengers to propagate Dhamma. This monastery was at the helm of affairs during Ashoka’s reign. In his old age, when stopped by the heir-apparent, Ashoka had sent the half an amalakha fruit on an earthen plate as his last gift to be divided among the monks of this monastery.<ref>[https://www.bihar.world/home/buddhist-sites/patliputra/kukkutarma/ ‘Kukkutarama’]. According to an ''[[Ashokavadana]]'' legend, the [[Shunga Empire|Shunga]] king [[Pushyamitra Shunga|Pushyamitra]] tried to destroy the monastery, but it was saved by a miracle.{{sfn|Lahiri|1974|p=}}

[[Mahadeva (Buddhism)|Mahadeva]] is said to have received his ordination at Kukkutarama (Pataliputta), before becoming the head of the [[Sangha (Buddhism)|sangha]].
