Pirzada Abbas Siddiqui is an Indian cleric and the head of Muslim shrine Furfura Sharif.[1] Siddiqui is the founder of Furfura Sharif Ahale Sunnatul Jamat and formed Indian Secular Front in 21 January 2021.[2] [3] He is the scion of the Siddiqui family, which is the custodian of the famous Furfura Sharif shrine.[4]
Early life
Abbas Siddiqui was born to Pirzada Ali Akbar Siddiqui. He is the great-grandson of Abu Bakr Siddiqui who established the Silsila-e-Furfura (Order of Furfura Sharif) and is the nephew of Toha Siddiqui.[5]
Siddiqui has an MA in Theology from Furfura Fatehia Senior Madrasah.
Political Career
On 21 January 2021 he formed his party Indian Secular Front which will be contesting in the 2021 West Bengal Elections. Initially they planned to join hands with AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi[6], however that plan faltered[7] and instead he joined hands with the Left Front (comprising of various Communist parties) and the Congress to form the Sanjukta Morcha.
Controversies
Siddiqui has been criticized for spreading misinformation and making controversial comments. He has been infamous for his incendiary rhetoric, fear-mongering and calls for 'divine intervention' for the death of 50 crore Indians.[8] He was seen addressing a large gathering of followers and praying to Allah to kill 50 crore Indians with the virus.
On February 26, 2020, a video of Siddique had gone viral on social media in which he was heard referring to Delhi riots and saying: Template:Quote He also said that he did not mind whether he would die or survive but he would surely take Hindus with him. However, he later claimed that he was quoted 'out of context'.[9]
In 2019, after the Indian government passed the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Siddiqui claimed that the citizenship law was unfair to the Muslim population of the country and threatened to block Kolkata airport if the law was not revoked. He urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to either move the Supreme Court or bring a resolution against CAA in State Assembly or else risk losing the support of Muslims in West Bengal.[9]
In February 2020, he claimed that the actor-turned politician Nusrat Jahan, earn money by showing body and called her "Shameless" for visiting temples.[10]
