Anbil Alanthurai Temple[1] (அன்பில் சத்தியவாகீசுவரர் கோயில்)[2] is a temple dedicated to Shiva, located on the banks of the Kollidam river in Anbil, a small village near Lalgudi.
The temple has a 5-tier Raja gopuram, an outer prakaram (outer courtyard), and a nandavanam (flower garden). Many inscriptions cover the walls of the temple. The architecture is from the Chola period.
Legend
The vinayagar, Lord Ganesa, is called "Sevi Saitha Vinayagar" and is believed to have lent his ears (sevi) for the songs of Sambandar.
History
Parantaka Chola I is believed to have built the temple.
Anbil is a village in the Trichy district, which has many Chola temples, including Varadharaja Perumal temple, Siva temple, Mariyamman temple, and Aachi raama valli amman temple. They are maintained by the department of Aranilayathurai.
It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. This place was referred to in Thevaram written by Saint Poet (7th Century AD) Thirugnana Sambanthar and Appar.[3]
