Avtar Singh Brar (born 13 March 1939) is an Indian politician. He won 1992 Punjab Legislative Assembly elections from the Faridkot constituency, and again won in 1997 and 2007.[1]
Early life and education
Brar was born in 1939 to father Naranjan Singh Brar. He did his matric and JBT at Panjgrain Kalan and Faridkot. He has one son and one daughter.[1]
Political career
Brar started his political career as a trade unionist. He was a teacher by profession and resigned from his teaching job to join congress in 1972. In 1972, he was elected as the president of district congress committee, faridkot and remained in this position until 1994. Throughout his career, he served in several important roles, including chairman of the market committee in kotkapura, director at markfed, director at the Central Cooperative Bank in faridkot, and director of the market committee in kotkapura.[2]
Brar was first elected to Punjab Legislative Assembly in 1992 from faridkot. He was re-elected from the same constituency in 1997 and 2007.[3] Brar served as education minister in the congress government, which was led by Harcharan Singh Brar, in 1995.[4] He was also appointed as chief whip by Congress.
In October 2013, he changed his political allegiance by joining the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal due to differences with Amarinder Singh and Partap Singh Bajwa.[5] He was appointed as chairman of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC).[6]
Death
He died on 11 December, 2016 at PGIMER, Chandigarh due to brain haemorrhage.[2]
