Template:Infobox Officeholder Chander Bhan Khayal is an Indian Urdu poet and journalist.[1] He has made a significant contribution to Urdu literature, and for this contribution he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2021.
Career
Chandrabhan Khayal was born on 30 April 1946 in Babai, in the Hoshangabad district (now Narmadapuram) of Madhya Pradesh. He was born into a simple family.[2] Their means of livelihood were agriculture and small-scale trade.[3] During his childhood, he faced a lack of resources and completed his early education despite many hardships.[4] He completed his graduation from Sagar University (Dr. Harisingh Gour University), Madhya Pradesh.[5] After completing his graduation, he moved to Delhi in search of better employment opportunities. There, he began his career as a journalist.[6] He began working with Savera and Qaumi Awaaz. From 1981 to 2006, he worked as a Special Correspondent for Qaumi Awaaz. In 1979, his first poetry collection Sholon Ka Shajar was published.[7] This collection drew the attention of leading Urdu writers and critics of that time.[8] Some of his well-known works include Taaza Hawa Ki Tabishein, Laulak, Sholon Ka Shajar, Gumshuda Aadmi Ka Intezaar, Sulagti Soch Ke Saaye, and Subah-e-Mashriq Ki Azaan.[9][10] He served as Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL), Government of India, from 2008 to 2011, and was also a member of the Governing Council of the Delhi Urdu Academy for two terms.[11] He served as the Convener of Urdu Advisory Board at the Sahitya Akademi from 2013 to 2017, In 2020, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh Urdu Academy. He further contributed as a member of the Urdu Advisory Board of the National Book Trust (NBT), India, and served as the Convenor of the Urdu Bhasha Samiti for the Saraswati Samman under the K. K. Birla Foundation, Delhi.[12] He is currently in his second term as Convener.
Awards and Honours
In 2021, he was awarded the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for Taaza Hawa Ki Tabishen.[13][14] In 2003, he was honoured by the Delhi Urdu Academy for his contribution to Urdu literature.[15] In addition, he received the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award, the Shehri Bhopali Award by the M.P. Urdu Academy, and he also received the Nai Aawaz Award for his renowned poetry collection Laulak.[16] He was awarded the Sahitya Sangam Award for promoting harmony between Hindi and Urdu literature and the All India Unani Tibbi Conference Award for promoting national integration.[17] In 2014, Khayal received the national ‘Iqbal Samman’ award from the Department of Culture, Madhya Pradesh.[18] In 2011, he was honored with the Tagore Literary Award for his ghazal collection 'Subah-e-Mashriq ki Azan'.[19] In recognition of his contributions, he was honoured with the Vishwarang Manad Samman in 2025.
