Draupadi Murmu (born 20 June 1958) is the president-elect of India. She was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party[1]. She had served as the ninth Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Murmu was a presidential candidate for the National Democratic Alliance in the 2022 election, having won the election on July 21, 2022. She is the second person belonging to a scheduled tribe contesting for the same post, and the first woman belonging to scheduled tribe to be the President of India.[2] Draupadi Murmu will take oath as the 15th President of India on July 25 at the Parliament House, New Delhi. She won against Yashwant Sinha (former diplomat and union cabinet minister) with a lead of 5,77,777 votes, as per the latest counting.
Personal life
Draupadi Murmu was born in a Santali tribal family on June 20, 1958, in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, to Biranchi Narayan Tudu.[3]Template:Better source needed[4] Both her father and grandfather were elected as sarpanch under the Panchayati Raj system.[5]Template:Better source needed
Draupadi Murmu married Shyam Charan Murmu, a banker, who died in 2014. The couple had two sons, both of whom are dead, and a daughter. She lost her husband and two sons in a span of 4 years. [6] Spiritually Murmu has been associated with the Brahma Kumaris.[7]
Educational Qualifications
Draupadi Murmu is an arts graduate of Rama Devi Women's College. She was appointed as a junior assistant in the Odisha Irrigation Department after serving as an honorary assistant professor at Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research in Rairangpur.[source]
Teaching career
Murmu started out as a school teacher before entering state politics. She worked as an assistant professor at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur and junior assistant at irrigation department Government of Odisha.[8]
Political career
Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected as the councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. Murmu became the Chairperson of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2000.Template:Citation needed
During the BJP and Biju Janata Dal coalition government in Odisha, she was the Minister of State with Independent Charge for Commerce and Transportation from March 6, 2000, to August 6, 2002, and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development from August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004.[9]Template:Better source needed [10]
Governor of Jharkhand
Template:Expand section Murmu took oath as the Governor of Jharkhand on 18 May 2015, becoming the first woman Governor of Jharkhand.[11]
As Governor in 2017, Murmu had refused to give assent to a bill approved by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly seeking amendments to the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act, 1908, and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act, 1949. The bill sought to give rights to tribals to make commercial use of their land, while ensuring that the ownership of land does not change. Murmu sought an explanation from the Raghubar Das-led BJP government about the changes it would bring for the well-being of tribals.[12]Template:Better source needed
2022 presidential campaign
In June 2022, the BJP nominated Murmu as the National Democratic Alliance's candidate for President of India for the 2022 election the following month.[13] Should she be elected, she will be the first tribal politician and second woman to be elected president.[14] She was up against Yashwant Sinha, who was nominated as the opposing candidate for President by the opposition parties.
Murmu visited various states as part of the campaign around the country seeking support for her candidature, from BJP lawmakers and other opposition parties like JMM ,BSP and many others were some of the prominent opposition parties that extended their support to her.[15][16][17]
