Text Appearing Before Image: there was cause for dis-couragement, not only in the apathy of the miserlyand the prejudiced, but in the active counsel of thosewho thought the attempt impractical and destinedto end in failure like other native enterprises. Butit had been inaugurated to commemorate a manwhose name and work could never die ; and it wasthis auspicious connection, and the national characterof the movement, which supported it at criticalmoments, and encouraged its promoters to tide overall difficulties. These efforts and sacrifices might have ended innothing but for the timely offer of a young man whoagreed to give his time free. This young man, LalaHansraj, had just graduated after a brilliant Univer-sity career and had an equally bright future beforehim. The call of duty to religion and to the Mother-land, however, proved too strong to be ignored, andhe offered to serve the Institution as a teacher freeof any remuneration, his elder brother agreeing toshare his scanty salary with him. This sacrifice made it possible for the promotersto open the first department of the College, i.e., theschool, in 1886. Lala Hansraj has ever since beenthe guiding star and mainstay of this Institution.In the interests of the College he has not spared him-self in any way. His personality is unique in thehistory of the modern Punjab, the only other of whomwe could speak in the same breath being Lala MunshiRam, the founder of the Gurukula at Kangri. It isimpossible to think of the Arya Samaj without thesetwo names next to that of the great founder,Dayananda himself. It is equally impossible tothink of the Dayananda Anglo-Vedic College withoutLala Hansraj. There are other names worthy ofremembrance as of those who have by their devotionand service contributed to the success of the College,one of them being the late Rai Bahadur Lala LaiChan
