Jishnu Raghavan Alingkil (23 April 1979 – 25 March 2016),[1] known mononymously as Jishnu, was an Indian actor who predominantly appeared in Malayalam films including Tamil and Hindi films.[2] He was the son of actor Raghavan. He is best known for his debut film Nammal (2002),[3] for which he received the Kerala Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor and the Mathrubhumi Film Awards for Best Male Debut. His last film was Traffic (2016).[4][5]

Early life and education

Jishnu is the son of the film actor and director Raghavan[6][7] and Shobha. He did his schooling in Chennai and later at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. He attended a B.Tech in Mechanical engineering at the National Institute of Technology Calicut.[8][9][10][11]

Acting career

1987; 2002–2006: Debut and breakthrough

Jishnu first appeared as a child artist in the 1987 film Kilipattu[12] directed by his father and it was selected for the Indian Panorama.[13] He made his acting debut in Malayalam cinema as a lead in the film Nammal[14][15] in 2002 alongside newcomer Sidharth Bharathan, Bhavana and Renuka Menon[16] directed by Kamal which turned out to be a commercial success gaining him recognition.[17][18]

His performance in the film won him the Kerala Film Critics Award for Best Actor[19] and Mathrubhumi Film Awards[20] for Best Male Debut. His career followed up with lead roles in Valathottu Thirinjal Nalamathe Veedu,[21] Choonda[22], Freedom[23], Parayam[24], Two Wheeler[25] and Njaan[26]. He then played supportive parts in Nerariyan CBI,[27][28] Pauran,[29] Yugapurushan[30] and negative role in Chakkara Muthu[31] along with Dileep.[32][33][34][35]

2012–2014: Hiatus and comeback

Along with a few uncredited films, he took a break from the film industry to work on developing Information Technology in rural areas.[36][37] He later returned to the film industry and did supportive roles in Nidra,[38][39] Ordinary,[40][41] Banking Hours 10 to 4[42] and guest role in Ustad Hotel.[43][44] He was offered to act in Prabhuvinte Makkal.[45] In 2013, he played the lead roles in the films Annum Innum Ennum[46][47][48] and Rebecca Uthup Kizhakkemala.[49][50][51] He also experimented with acting at Barry John Theater Studios in Mumbai. In the same year, he signed his upcoming films Misfit alongside Sidhartha Siva, Indian Coffee House[52] and Iphone[53] with his father Raghavan and Vineeth, but these films did not release in theatres at that time he was diagnosed with cancer in 2014.[54][55][56][57]

2014–2016: Health illness and final film

During his first battle with cancer, his friends made a short film called Speechless.[58][59] It is about a college lecturer whose life is drastically changed by cancer. The short film stars film producer Shafir Saith, who is also Jishnu's friend, in the lead role. Before his treatment continued, he completed his Tamil debut as the lead actor in the 2015 film Kallappadam[60][61] opposite Lakshmi Priya Chandramouli and it received positive reviews.[62] He made his debut in Bollywood with a negative role in Traffic[63][64] which was released in 2016 and was his last film. He has also acted in the short film Karma Games[65] with Aadarsh Balakrishna, which was shot in 2013 and released in 2017. This was his directorial debut. Adarsh paid tribute to Jishnu by releasing this short film.[66][67][68][69]

Personal life

He was married in 2007 to his longtime girlfriend Dhanya Rajan, who was his junior at college and is an architect.[70][71][72][73]

Battle with Cancer and Positivity

Jishnu was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014.[74][75] Then, he had underwent surgery and got completely cured in it.[76][77] A few days ago, Jishnu posted on his social media:

The cancer went into remission, then relapsed on 2015[78][79] and he underwent treatment for it. He died due to lung cancer at the age of 36 on 25 March 2016 at Amrita Hospital in Kochi.[80][81][82] Before his death, he had posted an Inspirational post in his Facebook that makes a day with fulfilled positivity.[83][84][85]

Other than Malayalam films, Jishnu worked effortlessly for rural India.[86][87][88] He wanted to develop IT in these areas through diverse opportunities for business and education. He established 3100 cyber centers all over India.[89][90] He was an active Rotoract Club member, which was in Trivandrum, Kerala.[91][92] He, with several film personalities, was the founder of JJMAN.[93][94] It supports and helps different social service associations.[95][96][97][98][99][100]
